“Practice self-compassion”
We are often very hard on ourselves, constantly judging ourselves and comparing ourselves to others. Self-compassion is an attitude that consists of treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would have for a friend who was going through a difficult time.
How to practice self-compassion?
- Acknowledge your emotions: Instead of repressing your feelings, allow yourself to feel them without judging yourself.
- Be kind to yourself: Talk to yourself with words of encouragement and support.
- Accept your limitations: We all make mistakes. Learn from them and move on.
- Connect with others: Share your experiences and feelings with people you trust.
Benefits of self-compassion:
- Higher self-esteem: By treating yourself with more kindness, you will increase your self-confidence.
- Less stress: Self-compassion helps you handle difficult situations better.
- Better relationships: By being kinder to yourself, you will also be kinder to others.
- Greater happiness: Self-compassion fosters a more positive outlook on life.
A practical exercise:
Imagine a friend telling you that he or she is going through a difficult time. What would you say to him or her? How would you comfort him or her? Now, apply those same words to yourself.
Remember: Self-compassion is not the same as self-indulgence. It’s about being kind to yourself while still striving to improve.
